Aikido into CI

Aikido has been a major influence on the practice of Ci, and this workshop aims to honour those roots.

We’ll touch on some of the principles that inform both practices — and alongside the historical roots, we’ll explore our physical roots too. How do we stay grounded when met with force, without bracing or getting stuck? How do we move with force and find a shared direction?

By bringing a bit more agency into the hands, and more directionality into the movement, we add a useful dimension to the dance: one that allows for playfulness, a sense of safety under pressure, and more choice in how we respond.

This workshop is open to beginners as well as more experienced dancers who want to explore Contact Improvisation through an Aikido lens.
