Deep Touch

3-Day Workshop with Rosalind Holgate-Smith

Deep Touch, photo 1

On what it means to touch, and be touched deeply.

This workshop will introduce deep touch techniques including gradual weight loading, sticky touch, and hugging, holding, squeezing involving deep compression and release.

Each morning will begin with slow somatic bodywork and will focus on one of the techniques. We will dive through and awaken distinct layers of skin, fascia, fat, muscle and bone, working slowly to invite release and expanded spatial awareness so that we may progress into more dynamic dancing with enhanced receptivity, sensitivity and compassion.

Through the exploration of the deep touch techniques the workshop sets a framework of tools to investigate what it means to be touched deeply, physically, energetically and emotionally. The aim is to question how we can cultivate dances of greater depth, intimacy and expressive agency in Contact Improvisation?

Please come ready for somatic bodywork, flying, lifting, soft acrobatics and authentic interactions!

Day 1. Holding: Exploring gradual weight loading, deep compression and release.

Day 2. Sticky Touch: Grasping fascia and awakening the whole body in movement and touch.

Day 3. Hugging and Squeezing: Discerning tension, playing the instrument and exploring advanced tools in compression and release.

*Recommended for intermediate to advanced CI dancers.
